Bar review: Behind This Wall, Hackney Central

Behind This Wall is located just a stone’s throw from Hackney Central station. I rarely traipse that far out, but after seeing positive reviews on Time Out, it was a good excuse to head there.

At 411 Mare Street, the bar is rather inconspicuous, which makes it all the more appealing. A friendly doorman greets you on arrival and ushers you down the steep staircase, where you draw open the curtains to reveal a cosy home-made bar. There was some resemblance of an Ikea type design, but it really felt like a bunch of mates had knocked the entire bar together with plywood – which I liked. There was a snug, honest and a friendly vibe with a DJ mixing chilled out vinyl beats throughout the night.

The seasonal cocktail menu is short and sweet, with a range of cocktails, non-alcoholic bevs and highballs. But you’ll also find a fine selection of shooters, whiskies, rums, mezcal, wines and great BEER. I must add, they’re all reasonably priced. Perhaps because they’re in the depths of Hackney?

You’ll also find oysters on the menu – 6-7pm is happy hour (£1). I’d recommend heading down to the bar before too many people find it!
